Action in Main Engine breakdown

 

bullet Raise general alarm.
bullet Inform master.
bullet Display NUC light/shape.
bullet Appropriate sound signal if in restricted visibility.
bullet Broadcast VHF warning to nearby vessels.
bullet Report to VTIS.
bullet Vessel to be on hand steering.
bullet Proceed to contingency anchorage nearby if near shallow water / vicinity of dangers.
bullet Notice to anchor party, ask them to prepare anchor.
bullet Ask the chief engineer to assess cause of failure.
bullet Ask engineers to rectify/repair if possible.
bullet Inform company. Ask company to arrange repair if not possible onboard.
bullet If repair is not possible, seek for outside assistance.
bullet Send urgency/distress message as appropriate if deemed necessary.
bullet Log down all the timings, position where engine failed, anchor/drifting position etc.
